In April we saw various reports linking Raphaël Varane with a move to Old Trafford but many thought it was another Sergio Ramos situation. But this summer the world cup winner made it clear he would not be signing a new contract at the Bernabéu and this gave United the greenlight to move in for the kill.
United held initial talks at the start of July and from that moment on the deal accelerated at an incredible pace. After talks with Varane’s representative’s, the dialogue then started between Manchester United and Real Madrid to agree on a fee. The two clubs reached an agreement in a matter of days agreeing on a £34m fee for the French defender.
He spent 10 years at Real Madrid winning 18 trophies a long the way including the Champions League four times. But the 28 year old won the biggest prize of them all in 2018 when he won the World Cup with France. When talking about the best defenders in the world Raphaël Varane is right up there.
Varane had a number of clubs interested in him but he made it clear he only wanted Manchester United. The chance to work with Solskjaer and play in the Premier League for a top European club was to much to turn down.
According to reports Varane will earn £300,000 a week and will take the number 4 shirt. He will sign a 4-year contract with an option to extend for a further year. After completing the signing of Jadon Sancho earlier this month this is turning out to be the best transfer window Manchester United have had for many years!
