Brighton came into this game full of confidence and rightly so, United the opposite.
The hosts started brightly and after 9 minutes Trossard saw his fierce effort strike the post. 11 minutes later Trossard hit the post again! He cut inside and unleashed a right foot shot but thankfully for De Gea the ball hit the foot of the post.
You’d think this would be a wake up call for United but it wasn’t the case. Brighton poured forward and on the half hour mark De Gea was called into action to make a smart save from a Webster header. Shortly after United came forward with there first meaningful attack of the half. Greenwood had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside.
On the 40th minute Brighton were awarded a penalty and a chance to take the lead. Lamptey broke into the box and Fernandes clipped the back of his heels to send him tumbling to the ground.
Maupay stepped up and confidently chipped the ball in to the back of the net. Fantastic panenka penalty and it was no more than Brighton deserved.
3 minutes later United were somehow level! Luke Shaw drove forward but got fouled before he could get his cross into the box. Fernandes’s free kick found Matic who played it back across goal for Maguire to make it 1-1!
The second half started with drama right away. Connolly broke into the box and went down under a challenge from Paul Pogba and ref Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot! But after checking VAR the decision was over turned, United could count themselves a little lucky. Five minutes later Brighton unbelievably found themselves 2-1 down.
Fernandes found Rashford with a wonderful through ball who then turned Ben White inside out before firing the ball into the top right hand corner! Scintillating goal by Rashford. The England forward had actually had a goal disallowed for offside minutes before. Pogba who had been cleared of fouling Connolly was having a terrible afternoon. Shortly after United took the lead he Fred took his place.
Brighton had been by far the better team and moments after they had gone behind they came forward at United once again. This time it was Solly March who saw his effort hit the post. The hosts were really piling on the pressure and it was surely only a matter of time before they got themselves level. With 15 minutes to go Trossard again hit the woodwork! A deep cross found him at the back post and his left foot strike cannoned off the crossbar, United were living dangerously.
Next it was Solly March with a chance. He found himself in acres of space in the box but he couldn’t keep his left foot shot down. Solskjaer felt it was time for a change and rightly so. Eric Bailly came on in place of Mason Greenwood in an attempt to tighten things up.
In the 3rd minute of added on time the home side had a great chance to snatch a point but De Gea denied Trossard with a smart save. Then In the 95th minute Brighton did get there equalizer. Jahanbakhsh’s dangerous cross found its way to the back post where Solly March was able to head in to make it 2-2. That wasn’t the end of the drama though!
United came forward in hope of one more chance and they got it from a corner. Fernandes’s ball in found Maguire who saw his header cleared off the line by Solly March. The final whistle went and the United players instantly surrounded the referee screaming for handball.
Chris Kavanagh checked the incident on the pitch side monitor and in doing so awarded United a penalty! Fernandes stepped up and calmly put the ball in to the top right hand corner to incredibly give United all 3 points!
Brighton will be wondering how they let the game slip away. They were all over United from start to finish and have gone away empty handed. Solskjaer and his men will know how lucky they were to come away with all 3 points today! Terrible showing from United and things need to improve.
