It seems likely Dean Henderson will only return to Man Utd if he is a regular next season. This in mind, it’s very likely that he will go back out on loan as David De Gea is still Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s No 1. But you could make a good argument for him to be the one between the sticks next season.
What are the facts? David de Gea finished the 2019/20 Premier League season with the second-best save success rate of 73.3%. A stat of goalkeepers to have made 25+ appearances. The only goalkeeper to better him was Dean Henderson with 75.2%. You could argue that it’s a different pressure playing for United.
Dean Henderson this season has started 36 times for Sheffield United. He finished the season joint-third in the Premier League clean sheets table on 13. The same amount as David de Gea. Sheffield United went on to finish an impressive ninth.
It hasn’t been going well for him recently but he is and will always be a club legend. I love David De Gea and remember the many games he won for us but lately, too many mistakes have crept into his game. When do you say enough is enough? He has cost us more points than he has won us lately.
A counter-argument is that he has been our only shining light post-Sir Alex. On the final day of the season, he broke the record for most clean sheets for a Man Utd goalkeeper in PL history. David De Gea at 29 has won Manchester United Player of The Year 4 times.
Solskjaer has insisted Henderson will become a future first-choice goalkeeper at United. Even after two David De Gea howlers in a forgettable match against Chelsea in the FA Cup. Ole Gunnar Solksjaer still kept faith with David Da Gea. Picking him for the final game of the season against Leceister.
David De Gea is one of the few who has earned the right to time and patience at United. A club legend. Most sensible fans still wouldn’t swap him with any goalkeeper in the world. BUT it would be great to get Dean Henderson back for next season. Healthy competition has never hurt anyone. We are fortunate to have both!
