Real Sociedad came in to this game 4-0 down from the first leg and they knew it would take a miracle for them to progress. With the pressure off the away side looked full of confidence and had started brightly. Janazuaj was back where it all began and he looked lively early on.
It didn’t take long for the first chance of the game and it was a golden one for the away side. Daniel James made a rash challenge in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Mikel Oyarzabal stepped up and fired the ball high and wide of Dean Henderson’s goal. Daniel James was reprieved and the score was still 0-0.
Fernandes was pulling the strings for United and with 25 minutes gone he nearly gave his side the lead. After some good work by Fred, Fernandes crashed a right foot shot against the bar. It was a fantastic effort that deserved a goal.
The game was being played mainly in the Sociedad half and next to try there luck was Daniel James. The Welshman got on to the end of dangerous cross but saw his powerful header saved by Remiro in the Sociedad goal. Fantastic save from close range. The home side pressed and pressed but couldn’t find the break through and we went in with the game goalless at the break.
Solskjaer made a triple substitution at the start of the second half. Fernandes, Wan-Bissaka and Fred were replaced by Rashford, Williams and Tuanzebe. Just like the start of the first half it was the away side who threatened early on at the start of the second. Bautista Orgilles Jon headed the ball goal wards but the crossbar came to United’s rescue.
With just over 30 minutes left United finally had the ball in the back of the net. A Telles corner was powerfully headed in by sub Axel Tuanzebe but after a VAR check the goal was chalked off. Lindelof had committed a foul in the build up which resulted in a yellow card.
Amad Diallo who had came on moments before was looking lively and confident on the ball. He didn’t seem phased by his first start at the theatre of dreams. Shola Shoretire who got 2 minutes in his debut against Newcastle was going to have a bit longer tonight. He replaced Mason Greenwood with 14 minutes remaining. It was good to see both youngsters getting some minutes and enjoying themselves out there.
Neither side could find a break through in the remaining minutes and the game finished goalless. The damage had been done in the first leg and United had made a tricky tie look very easy. The draw for the next round is tomorrow at midday.
