United came into this game in complete control of the tie. Granada knew they needed to get two goals just to force extra time. If the tie wasn’t already over it certainly was after six minutes. Telles found Pogba and his clever flick was superbly volleyed in past Rui Silva by the ruthless Cavani. It was an excellent finish and once again the Uruguayan showed why United should do all they can to keep hold of him.
Although the tie was up for Granada the Spanish side didn’t stand around feeling sorry for themselves. They looked lively and were a threat coming forward but de Gea remained unworked in the United goal. The home side were dominating possession but couldn’t add to their 1-0 lead on the night. Both Cavani and Fernandes had saw good chances come and go. Half time arrived and United were already thinking about the semi finals.
The start of the second half saw a rare appearance for Dutchman Donny van de Beek. Pogba had been booked in the first half and Solskjaer wasn’t taking any risks. It didn’t take the Dutch playmaker long to get involved. Moments after coming on he found Greenwood with a superb cross but the teenagers header was easily saved. Cavani then came close to adding to his earlier goal but his flicked header went just wide of Rui Silva’s right hand post. It seemed only a matter of time before United added a second.
Granada were still plugging away and with 25 minutes remaining German Sanchez drilled a shot just wide before Yangel Herrera saw his right foot strike well blocked. The Spanish sides efforts couldn’t be faulted but United had just been far to strong for the La Liga team.
Solskjaer made a host of changes in the final 15 minutes which included youngster Amad Diallo who took the place of Mason Greenwood. It didn’t take him long to get into the action when he burst through on goal and was very unlucky not to win his side a free kick. He’d clearly been brought down but the referee wasn’t interested.
United had been looking for a second goal all evening and in the 90th minute they got it. A Telles cross intended for Juan Mata was turned in by Granada defender Jesus Vallejo. Rui Silva was helpless and could do nothing to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Solskjaer’s side had done a very professional job over two legs and will now face Roma in the semi-final with the first leg being played on April the 29th. United are the bookmakers favorites to win the Europa League but Roma will certainly have something to say about that.
