Versatile defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah says goodbye to six years at Old Trafford today, as he moves to Bayer Leverkusen. The fee for the Bundesliga move is believed to be around £2million.
The Netherlands international struggled for minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season. With only 30 total appearances in all competitions to his name, he could never kick on in the first team.
Fosu-Mensah can play in several positions. He’s appeared at right-back, centre-back, and defensive midfield in his time at the club. His versatility is a useful aspect of his game. But it also left him with limited opportunities without a specialist position to challenge.
High hopes under Van Gaal

A product of Ajax’s famed youth academy, “Timbo” moved to Old Trafford in 2014. He then made his debut under fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal in 2016.
Hopes were high for the player, as van Gaal gave several youth players their chance on his watch. But the minutes didn’t come. He spent two seasons out on loan between 2017-19, at Fulham and Crystal Palace respectively.
His United contract was due to run out this summer. With limited game time since Solskjaer’s arrival, the time was right to move on.
“It’s difficult when you’ve got good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game time. He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again.“
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Timothy Fosu-Mensah
Fosu-Mensah moves to a Bayer Leverkusen side who are 3rd in the Bundesliga at the time of writing. Still plenty of opportunities to prove himself at the top level. Paul Pogba posted this to his socials as the squad said their farewells.
Best of luck Timbo on your new adventure in the Bundesliga!
