Is Raphaël Varane About To Swap The Bernabéu For Old Trafford?

Raphael Varane is a French central defender who currently plays for Spanish side Real Madrid. The 28 year old joined Madrid in 2011 and has won 18 honors including the Champions League four times since his arrival at the Bernabeu.

When talking about central defenders, Varane is held in very high regard and its easy to see why. He’s dominant in the air, reads the game well and is very quick across the ground. The pace of Varane is something that would serve him well in the Premier League as each season the tempo seems to go up another notch.

In recent months we’ve seen the partnership of Maguire and Lindelöf really flourish. United have conceded just 35 goals in the league and since the start of March have let in just 5 goals in all competitions. But if a CB was signed in the summer you’d assume it would be Lindelöf who’d make way, as harsh as it seems. The Swede has barely put a foot wrong and at times his performances have gone under the radar. His performance at Elland Road on Sunday was exceptional and highlighted just how much he’s improved since the start of the season. He’s certainly giving Solskjaer something to think about.

Reports suggest Florentino Perez wants to prevent Varane leaving on a free next year so he’s desperate to cash in on him this summer. United aren’t the only club in the running for the French defender but they do seem to be at the front of the queue. Should United sign the Madrid centre back they would need to part with around 60 million pounds. He’d certainly be a great addition to Solskjaer’s side and with United heading for Champions League Football for the second season in a row, surely Varane would be tempted.
