Man Utd bargained until the final hours of the summer window for Jadon Sancho. Sadly that transfer never came to fruition but new reports would suggest some light at the end of this transfer saga tunnel. BILD are reporting that the asking price for the English superstar has been dropped by £20 million.
Sancho’s season so far
Jadon Sancho again this year was in the colours of Borrusia Dortmund. Currently they sit 6th in the Bundesliga and 13 points off of leaders Bayern Munich. This is a big drop off from Dortmund in terms of league position as compared to previous years.
It will be no surprise for you to discover then that Sancho’s season has followed suit. So far this season Sancho has a total of 3 goals and 7 assists in 17 league games. This is a far cry from the goal contribution a game stats he was putting up last campaign. So what could the reason for this be? Well there are a few determining factors.
The first reason is the emergence of Erling Haaland as one of the worlds best goalscorers. Haaland is averaging a goal per game in the league, thus the pressure has been taken off Sancho somewhat. Secondly, Dortmund have been poor. They have created less goalscoring opportunities this season, than in the previous two. Ultimately, scoring less goals collectively. Thirdly, many will argue that Sancho was playing like somebody who had his head turned. There’s no doubt that Sancho wanted the move in the summer. Sancho and United had personal terms agreed for weeks and the fee was just a formality. As we know this was not the case, Dortmund stood strong and United weren’t to be pushed around. It is not far fetched to suggest that this affected his performances on the pitch especially in the first few months. Since December his performances picked up perhaps due to him believing it’s a final push before the transfer this summer.
Do United still need Sancho?
Man Utd are currently sat 2nd in the premier league and this is without doubt the best season since the days of Fergie. The tabloid media speculated that Manchester United had cooled their interest in the winger due to the arrival of Amad Diallo. Now BILD are reporting that the fee has been dropped by £20 million so where do the club stand?.
Sancho would undoubtedly improve the team. He would bring balance into the side with his natural position being on the right. Despite Diallo’s potential, Sancho is a player for the here and now of Manchester United. If we want to be considered the best he is the type of talent we need. If you were look to the current league leaders. Man City have 2 quality players in each position and for United to eclipse them in the future they need to do the same. Sancho’s goal contributions even this year would put him 3rd in the Man Utd squad behind only Bruno and Rashford. If United get the clear run at Sancho that they did last summer they would be foolish to not pounce at this reduced price.
