Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit for defender Raphaël Varane and are now in direct contact with Real Madrid. After opening talks weeks ago negotiations are now at an advanced stage and personal terms won’t be a problem. The French defender has shown no intention of signing a new contract and is very keen on a new challenge.
Varane has spent the last 10 years at Real Madrid but his long stay at the Spanish giants looks to be coming to an end. Sergio Ramos has already departed for PSG so Madrid will be reluctant to let Varane go as well. The noise coming from Spain is that it’s more than likely that Varane will end up at Old Trafford this summer and there’s no doubt he’d be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire.
Manchester United and Real Madrid are £20m apart in valuation for Raphaël Varane. United feel £40m is fair but Madrid want close to £60m for the 28 year old. Varane has one year left on his current contract so United are keen to negotiate a lower fee knowing he is free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. Although Varane is one of a number of defenders United are looking at, he is certainly their main target.
United were cautious of being used to get Varane a new bumper contract but those worries were quickly played down. After 10 years in Spain and Madrid in a period of transition, it’s clear to see why the Frenchman would want a new challenge. Not only would he improve the first team at Manchester United but he’d also be able to pass on valuable knowledge to the younger players around the club.
