Manchester United will be seeking to return to winning ways as we take on Atalanta in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. The match kicks off at 20:00PM BST. The game can be watched live in the UK on BT Sport with coverage starting at 19:00 PM.

United began their Champions League campaign with a surprise 2-1 defeat to Young Boys but they turned it around in the following game. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 95th minute against Villarreal sealed our first three points of the group stage to leave us third in Group F. The Red Devils still have plenty to do if we are to reach the knockout stages.

Inconsistent Form

The Red Devils come into this game off the back of a 4-2 defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League at the weekend. Mason Greenwood had given us the lead with a sublime strike. Our opponents then hit back to take the lead. Marcus Rashford then equalised for us but within 15 seconds of the kick-off United was behind again, and Patson Daka then added the fourth for the Foxes in stoppage time.

The good start we had in the Premier League has now gone as we have only picked up one point in our three league matches. We had the 1-1 draw against Everton with us losing previously to Aston Villa before succumbing to defeat at Leicester.

Media speculation suggests that Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s position at the club is under threat though official statements coming out of United are that they backing the Norweigan. Solskjær will be hoping to pick up the win and build some momentum going into this tricky run of fixtures ahead.

Manchester United Team News

For United, we will be without the services of Raphael Varane, Amad Diallo and Anthony Martial through injury. Harry Maguire made a quicker recovery to feature against Leicester at the weekend and is expected to remain in the defence. Fred and Edinson Cavani have returned from international duty having missed Saturday’s game and will be looking to play some part against Atalanta.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s suspension in the Champions League following his red card against Young Boys was reduced to one game. This means he will be available and is likely to replace Diogo Dalot at right-back.

Opposition Preview

Atalanta has made a better start to their European campaign when compared to their league form. The Italian side has finished third in the league for the past three seasons. However, this season they have lost two of their opening seven matches and have gained three narrow victories.

On Sunday, they produce a 4-1 win away at Empoli with Josip Ilicic hitting two goals followed by an own goal and then Daniel Zapata rounding off the win leaving them sixth in the Serie A table. Atalanta will be coming to Old Trafford to get the win that would put them in a good position in Group F.

Atalanta Team News

For our opponents, Hans Hateboer and Robin Gosens will not feature due to injury. Davide Zappacosta and Joakim Maehle will occupy the wing-back positions. They are also without Matteo Pessina and Berat Djimsiti due to hamstring and hand injuries.

This will be the first meeting between United and Atalanta in a European competition and so there is no previous form between the sides. The Red Devils’s form have been up and down so far this season. Despite this patchy run of form, the Old Trafford faithful will get behind the team in a game that we must win.
