Manchester United will look to bounce after the defeat to Queens Park Rangers at the weekend with our third pre-season game against fellow Premier League opposition Brentford on Wednesday evening. The match kicks off at 20:00PM BST. The game can be watched live in the UK on MUTV with coverage starting at 19:00PM.
The pre-season results can never tell how good of a season we may have. Whilst we secure a 2-1 victory over Derby Country in our first game, conceding four goals to Championship side QPR will not have been a pleasant experience for players on the pitch. The pre-season aim is to get the players fit and assess them closely.
United started the game against QPR brightly as Jesse Lingard opened the scoring within four minutes of the game. This was as good as it got for the Red Devils as the opposition came back at us as we conceded a Charlie Austin goal within two minutes of going ahead. In a six-minute spell during the second half that saw the United defence all over the place, with QPR’s Lyndon Dykes scoring twice along with Moses Odubajo adding another. We did pull one goal back through Anthony Elanga but ultimately QPR ran out 4-2 winners.
The Red Devils have recently confirmed the signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, with Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane close to arriving at the club. United have Preston North End and Everton to face in the next pre-season games. We then start our league campaign at home to Leeds United on August 14th. We cannot underestimate this Brentford side as they will want to prove a point ahead of their first time back in the top-flight.
Manchester United Team News
For United, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has confirmed that Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, and Fred will make their return in a week’s time. The remaining players who have been on international duty are set to return to training this week. They are unlikely to play in the Brentford game. Solskjær will be picking from the same squad that played against QPR.
Jesse Lingard is likely to be given another start against Brentford. He’s featured during the previous two pre-season games. Whilst Anthony Elanga and James Garner will be hoping to impress Ole and the Old Trafford faithful on Wednesday.
Manchester United’s Predicted Lineup
Heaton; Wan-Bissaka, Mengi, Tuanzebe, Williams; Garner, Matic, Mata; Elanga, Greenwood, Lingard.
Brentford has started their pre-season well. They have not lost in any of their four games as they prepare for their first season in the Premier League. They have achieved victories over Wimbledon, Boreham Wood, Cambridge United, and Watford so far.
In the game at the weekend against Watford, Ivan Toney bagged a brace with Halil Dervisoglu getting the other as they ran out 3-1 winners. West Ham United, Southend United, and Valencia are up next for the Bees after their trip to Old Trafford. Manager Thomas Frank will be hoping to carry on the momentum and achieve a positive result on Wednesday evening.
The last time that Manchester United and Brentford met was back in 1975 during the League Cup, with the Red Devils securing a 2-1 victory.
Brentford Team News
For our opponents, they have seen an influx of new players come in. Kristoffer Ajer has arrived from Celtic, whilst FC Midtjylland comes in from FC Midtjylland. Matthew Cox and Myles Peart-Harris have joined the Bees from Wimbledon and Chelsea respectively.
Mathias Jensen, Pontus Jansson, and Christian Norgaard are expected to return soon. They had all featured for their respective countries during Euro 2020.

This will be an energetic encounter as both teams step up their preparations ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. United will want to put in a more assured defence display after conceding four goals at the weekend. Brentford’s Ivan Toney will be one of the opposition players that we will be looking to stop from scoring.
