Manchester United meets West Ham United twice in a matter of days but this time in the third round of the League Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening. The match kicks off at 19:45PM BST. The game can be watched live in the UK on Sky Sports with coverage starting at 19:00PM.

Redemption for Jesse Lingard

The Red Devils claimed a 2-1 victory over the Hammers on Sunday with Jesse Lingard scoring the winning goal for us. It just had to be him who would have the biggest influence in the game. Whilst on loan at West Ham during the second half of last season, his goals and assists propelled them into the Europa League. David Moyes had wanted to bring the England international back to the London Stadium. Ultimately Lingard decided to stay at United to fight for his place.

Lingard’s 89th-minute winning goal came after Cristiano Ronaldo had levelled the scores following Said Benrahma opener for the Hammers in the first half. West Ham did have the opportunity to nick a point from the game in injury time after Luke Shaw’s handball in the penalty area. Mark Noble who was brought onto to take the penalty, which was subsequently saved David De Gea to send the travelling United fans home very happy indeed.

United had bounced back from the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in the Champions League last Tuesday. In the Premier League, we have taken 13 points from a possible 15 in our opening five games.

Can United Go One Step Further?

We have reached the semi-finals of the League Cup in the previous two seasons only to be knocked out by our rivals Manchester City. The last time the Red Devils lifted the League Cup trophy was back in the 2016/17 season when we defeated Southampton 3-2 in the final. We will hope to advance beyond the semi-final stages of the competition this season and go on to win our first piece of silverware under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

For United, they will still be without the services of both Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo. Edinson Cavani could feature for us if he has recovered from his injury in time. It might be too soon Phil Jones to return to the first team. It is likely we will see the centre back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.  Donny Van De Beek, Diogo Dalot and Anthony Martial are all expected to be in the starting eleven.

Opposition Preview

Manager David Moyes insisted after his side defeat to Manchester United on Sunday that he does not regret bringing on Mark Noble for the injury-time penalty, which he subsequently missed. The result means that West Ham has not recorded a win in the last three league outings.

The Hammers started the 2021/22 season brightly achieving wins over Newcastle United and Leicester City respectively. Whilst they recorded a 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in their Europa League group stage game. However, they have only picked up two points in the last three Premier League games with draws against Crystal Palace, Southampton and then the defeat against Manchester United.

Over the previous two seasons, West Ham has gone out in the third and fourth rounds with defeats to Everton and Oxford United. They have not made it beyond the fourth round of the competition since the 2017/18 season when they lost to Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

For our opponents, Michail Antonio is likely to return to the starting eleven having served his suspension. The only absentee from the West Ham is Winston Reid, who is out injured. Alphonse Areola is likely to deputise for number one goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek are set to be rested with Mark Noble and Alex Kral being the central midfield duo. Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko could feature along with Ryan Fredericks and Arthur Masuaku.

Match Stats

  • Manchester United last met West Ham in the League Cup back in the 2016/17 season, which the Red Devils ran out 4-1 winners.
  • Manchester United has won the last four consecutive games against West Ham in all competitions.

For both Manchester United and West Ham, you could argue their priorities lie in the league and the European competitions within the next two weeks. Our opponents will definitely be looking to avenge their defeat on Sunday. A number of fringe players at United will get the chance to stake their claim for a regular spot in the starting eleven. It is set to be an entertaining match and I expect United to go through to the next round despite the expected changes to the lineup.
