A small amount of home fans returned for the final home game of the season and it wasn’t long before they were off their seats. This was Cavani’s first game infront of the United faithful and he marked it with a wonderful goal. After Fernandes had let the ball run through to him the Uruguayan outrageously chipped the ball over Areola from distance and United had an early lead. Cavani had made a late entry for goal of the season!
United were on top and just before the half hour mark Fernandes brought a fine save out of Areola in the Fulham goal. The visitors grew into the game and just before half time they should of levelled. Fabio Carvahlo went on a mazy run only to be denied by a fine save from David de Gea.
Areola had made some smart saves in the first half and he had to make another five minutes into the second. A Fernandes free kick was heading towards the top corner only for the Fulham number one to pull off a fine save. Next up it was Greenwood who’d be left frustrated. First he was flagged offside before seeing his low shot blocked.
Ademola Lookman has been a bright spark in what’s been a poor season for Fulham and on the hour mark de Gea made a good save to keep his well struck effort out. There was no pressure on Fulham and it told. The away team were comfortable on the ball and they weren’t scared of taking the game to United.
Solskajer’s side were having a quiet second half but with just over twenty minutes remaining they nearly doubled their lead. Mason Greenwood latched on to a dangerous cross but his effort whistled just past the post. Moments later it was Greenwood again who would see a chance come and go. The teenager tricked his way into the box before Areola denied him with a good save.
Fulham were still in the game and on the 76th minute they levelled. Booby Reid’s cross found it’s way to the back post and Joe Bryan headed in for his first goal of the season. United looked stunned but in truth they couldn’t complain. They’d offered very little in the second half and once again they’d conceded from a cross into the box! Solskjaer looked far from impressed on the United bench and rightly so.
United came forward in search of a winner but it never came and the points were shared. The Europa League final is just ten days away and United’s form is concerning. They’ve had three home games in a week and picked up just one point. If United are to finish the season with a trophy they need to be much better than they have been in the last three weeks!
