After Manchester United failed to capture Jadon Sancho in the summer of 2020, fans expect that the club will try again this year. That said I want to have a look at the possibility that the club split the Sancho money three ways and give us a title winning team again. I will be looking at three players valued at around £40million by ‘Transfermarkt’.
The first player is by far the most obvious. It’s no secret that United admire the French centre-back who plays for RB Leipzig in Germany. There are many upsides to this signing. The biggest one of note is that Upamecano has a release clause of just €42million (about £38million). This is a steal for such a talented defender with not only great experience but heaps of potential too. This season he averages 1.86 tackles per 90 as well as 1.89 interceptions per 90. This far exceeds the stats of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof who have come under scrutiny for their recent mistakes in big moments. Also it would leave him behind only Wan-Bissaka for tackles in the United squad. Dayot would bring some vital pace to the defence too, making United less vulnerable in transition. At that price, it seems a no-brainer for Ole to make Upamecano a top target this summer.
Looking at what would be the more Sancho-esque replacement, Domenico Berardi would become a fan favourite at Old Trafford. He has 7 goals and 4 assists this season whilst playing on the right hand side for Serie A side Sassuolo. Berardi’s underlying numbers are also impressive. His through ball attempts at 0.4 per game, which beat both Rashford and Martial. these two sit at 0.09 and 0.2 respectively. This is key when looking at the new winger for United. No other team in the Premier League attempt more through balls per 90 than the Red Devils. Berardi would fit in with the United system well as his attempted dribbles per 90 compare well to Martial and Rashford. He would be amazing on the right wing and with a value of a mere £27million, we should consider him as a bargain.
The last of the players is one that is less well-known. Koopmeiners is a young player for AZ Alkmaar who can play at the base of midfield or in defence. Last season he got 13 goal contributions in 25 and this season he has 12 in 14 games. This indicates, he has an eye for a goal and is a very good passer of the ball. His impressive pass completion rate of 87% would put him top at Man Utd. In defence, he is no slouch either. He averages 4.3 tackles and interceptions per 90. When playing for such a ball dominant side, this is very impressive. In terms of passing, he averages 0.34 long balls more per game than anyone else in the Premier League. At the age 22, he would join the side and provide a great option in squad rotation. This again seems to fit with the type of signings Ole has made in his time at the club. Koopmeiners’ value on ‘Transfermarkt’ is £15million. With general market inflation, he would cost around £30million.
