Manchester United will head to the south coast in our first away game of the Premier League 2021/22 season as we play Southampton on Sunday afternoon. The match kicks off at 2:00PM BST. The game can be watched live in the UK on Sky Sports with coverage starting at 1:00PM.

The Red Devils will be looking to make it back to back wins at St. Mary’s and build upon the impressive opening day 5-1 win against Leeds. Bruno Fernandes netted his first hat-trick for the club with Mason Greenwood and Fred also on the scoresheet as we sent a message out to our rivals. Paul Pogba played brilliantly and had four assists during this game which also saw new signing Jadon Sancho make his debut at Old Trafford.

It could not have been a better start to the season for United, who announced our other new signing Raphael Varane just before the game against Leeds coming out to rapturous applause from the fans. He is now in contention to make his debut at Southampton.

We finished last season without any silverware to show for it, though we did reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals of the League Cup and the Europa League final. United show progress in the league as we finished second in the table albeit 12 points behind our neighbours Manchester City.

The Red Devils know a strong start to the season will stand us in good stead if we are to challenge for the title. After our trip to the south coast tomorrow, the next five fixtures see us play Wolverhampton Wanderers, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Everton.

United will want to carry on their brilliant away form as we were undefeated on the road last season in the league picking up 43 points in the process. The last time we were beaten away from Old Trafford was back in January 2020 when we lost to Liverpool.

Manchester United Team News

For United, we remain without a number of first-teamers. Marcus Rashford, Alex Telles and Dean Henderson are not featuring due to injury or covid-related issues. Jesse Lingard is back in contention having recovered from coronavirus. Edinson Cavani has reported back to training and could feature in the matchday squad.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær has given hints that new signing Raphael Varane is likely to travel with the squad to Southampton. Victor Lindelof is likely to partner Harry Maguire in the centre of defence. Jadon Sancho is in line to make his first start for the club, having come off the bench against Leeds last weekend. It is likely he will replace Daniel James on the right wing.

Opposition Preview

Southampton is competing in their 10th season of top-flight football. However, the club’s recent finishes in seasons gone by will be of concern to the supporters. A number of key players have left the club during the summer transfer window.

During the last three seasons, the Saints have finished 17th, 16th and 15th. Their form dipped considerably in the second half of last season. It was thanks to the results they got in the first half of the season that kept them out of the relegation zone. They have brought in the likes of Adam Armstrong and Romain Perraud. However, Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard – two important players left for Aston Villa and Leicester City respectively.

As we head toward the end of August, Southampton will take on Newport County in the League Cup. This is followed by the league fixture against Newcastle United. It will be interesting to see how the season unfolds for the Saints.

Southampton Team News

For our opponents, they are without Sam McQueen and William Smallbone through injury. Other than that, manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has a near full-strength side to choose from. James Ward-Prowse, who recently extended his contract with the club is expected to feature in the middle of the park.

Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo are likely to be in the starting eleven. Kyle Walker-Peters who did not come on in the game against Everton last weekend could earn a recall to the side.

Match Stats

  • In their last league meeting in February, Manchester United inflicted a 9-0 defeat on Southampton, the joint-biggest Premier League victory in history, with the other two games also involving Man Utd and the Saints: Man Utd 9-0 Ipswich in March 1995 and Southampton 0-9 Leicester City in October 2019. • Manchester United have recovered 35 points from losing positions in Premier League games against Southampton, more than any side has against another in the competition’s history. (source: Opta)
  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 26 away Premier League matches (W17 D9) and a win or draw here would see the Red Devils equal the longest away unbeaten in English top-flight history, set by Arsenal in a 27-game run between April 2003 and September 2004. (source: Opta)

Predicted score

Southampton is more than capable of not making this an easy match for us. United will have to be on their guard. However, confidence will be riding high after our 5-1 win against Leeds. Plus, we will have too much in our arsenal to see off the Saints.

Southampton 1-3 Manchester United
